Brussel sprouts Groninger
Brassica oleracea var. gemnifera
It has a high and strong stem on which it makes many small round buds 2-4 cm in diameter. It grows up to 1,5 m high. beside buds, we an also use leaves, for example in smoothies.
Brussel sprouts have quite long growing season - it is sown form May to edn of July and it must be done growing by the end of September. It makes sprouts only when it grows high enough. Therefore, if the plant hasn't finish growing by the end of September, we cut of the top and thus encourage the growing of buds. They can be harvested from late autumn forward. It is recommended that we wait untill the first saline, as the buds get more flavorable.
