French bean Prepeličar Tomačevski
Phaseolus vulgaris
A Slovenian indigenous bean variety, found by Amarant on the farms of Tomačevo and listed in to the list of varieties for its outstanding qualities.
It produces flat green pods with or without purple stripes which discolour during cooking. Grains are brownish. It is very bushy and prolific, so it should be sown only 1 bean per 10-15 cm.
Low beans do not need support and are sown in rows. Ensure that there is enough space between the rows.
According to the sowing guide, harvest green beans on the day after flowering, . Harvesting them at this time encourages new flowering, so you will always have a new crop on the plant and the pods will remain soft for up to a week in the fridge. Harvesting the pods on the day of fruit, encourages the ripening of the grain, both on the plant and in the harvested pods. The pods then become hard and stringy within a few days and must be used up promptly, while the pods already set on the plant ripen quickly and no new flowers form. On leaf day, however, we advise against any harvesting or processing of beans at all, as this promotes the development of fungi, which later manifest themselves in the form of the disease.
