Spring onion Ischikrona
Allium fistulosum
Bulbs of a spring onion do not thicken and do not mature. We use the whole plant: the bulb, the tubular stem and the greenery. In Slovenia we call it ''mlada čebula'' (young onion) and in foreign recipes it's called ''spring onion'' or ''scallions''. We use it as an addition to salads or annexes and it is also popular in Chinese cuisine.
We can grow it throughout the year, but it has rather long growing season. If we sow it in the spring we can harvest it in autumn. If we want to have the spring onion for the first picnic in May, we sow the onion in September the previous year. When it reaches a suitable size for harvest, it can still be left in the soil, as the plant is retained and does not collapse, freezes or begins to ripen. We pick it up when we need it so we can enjoy spring onions all year round.
